The Medical Center's Outreach Director Kimberly Story listens in on a discussion about the process of transplanting.
Over the years, Story has seen many lives saved from receiving a transplant, but she says, there's still work to do. “It could take anywhere from 2-4 years, sometimes longer to receive an organ. That’s the main problem, there's definitely enough organs out there for people, it's just not enough organ donors,” says Story.
That’s why the Georgia Transplant Foundation is holding seminars across the country, educating people about the benefits and needs of a transplant. Story says a lot of people are listed as organ donors, but the uncertainties of the transplant process, scares them away from helping. “Some of the main concerns for transplant patients are how am I going to afford this? How am I going to pay for my medicine or how long am I going to be out work?”
The Georgia Transplant Foundation is helping those who need help, participating in a matching fund program. With a waiting list of about 3,000 people needing a transplant with almost 500 of them right here in middle Georgia, the foundation is pushing a drive to get more donors.
