The enrollment at Central Georgia Technical College is increasing due to the decline of the nation's economy. It's been years since Tony Blakley had to read a textbook, well 30 years to be exact and after being laid off from his job, Blakley decided to start a new path, landing him back in school. “I was scared to death to come back to school after having been out for 30 years,” says Blakley.
Blakely was laid off after sustaining injuries in an accident. 49 year old Blakley is flipping the pages from a career in visual merchandising to orthopedic technology. Although he's surrounded by younger students, Blakely says he feels right at home.
Vice President of Academic Affairs, Dr. Craig Wentworth says he's not surprised about the increase. “We have seen an increase in the traditional age students, the 18-24 year olds students. There have been huge increases in that non traditional age students. The students that's in their mid to upper 20's, than 30's, 40's and older,” says Wentworth.
Historically, the enrollment goes up, when the job market and the economy get s a little soft. With over 6,000 students here at Central Georgia Technical College, they offer over 190 programs, ranging from Bio Technology to Criminal Justice.
Enrollment in the technical college system of Georgia is at a record high of over 100,000 thousand students.
