New Years Eve Safety Tips

Kendall Herold

In just a few days, people all over the world will be ringing in the New Year.

The City of Macon is hosting it's first ever Cherry Blossom Ball Drop on New Years Eve. It will happen in Downtown Macon, at the intersection of Cherry and Third Streets.

The celebration is replacing the monthly First Friday party. Downtown Bars will open their doors, and open containers will be allowed on Downtown Streets. Allowing you to ring in the New Year with friends, family, and a few cocktails.

But event organizers say partaking in the holiday celebration is no reason to throw your responsibility out the door.

NewTown Macon Director of Place Kris Hattaway said, "Don't drink and drive. We have taxi services in Macon that we encourage everyone to utilize. We also have two partnering hotels, the new Macon Marriot River City Center Hotel, and the Ramada Plaza."

The Macon Police Department will be patrolling the streets of Downtown Macon during the New Years Celebration, and cracking down on impaired drivers.

The Bibb County Sheriff's Office will be patrolling the County, and they say drinking and driving won't take you anywhere but behind bars.

Leuitenant Chip Wagner with the Sheriff's Office added, "Last year in Bibb County, we had 26 fatalities. And this year, we've had 5."

The Sheriff's Office is cracking down on drunk drivers with Operation Zero Tolerance. If you're over the limit, you're going to jail. No warnings, no exceptions.

"Make prior arrangements to have some sort of transportation. A designated driver, cab, or limo service. There's even a company in town now that will come and pick you and your car up and safely deliver you to your house if you'd like to do that," stated Lt. Wagner.

Lt. Wagner says to always be cautious of other drivers. Even if you have a designated driver, the person in the lane next to you could be under the influence.
