Every year, for the past 51 years the city of Macon, has graciously donated gift to patients at a hospital in the state of Georgia, FOX 24's Michelle Apon tells us more about the Mayor's Motorcade and the cause behind it.
It's the 51st year for the Mayor's Motorcade and some mayors throughout the state are gathering together to spread holiday cheer and bring attention to the state's mental hospitals.
Kari Brown, the Director of Communications with Central State Hospital says, "A tradition that was started back in 1958 and mayors for all over the state of Georgia raise money and presents for clients, not only at Central State Hospital but at the other six psychiatric hospitals."
But before afternoon festivities took off in Milledgeville, city officials in Macon gathered Tuesday morning to load up boxes of toys, stuffed animals and toiletries for the patients at the hospital.
Mayor Reichert says, "It's a great gesture on the part of employees of the city of Macon to get together and support the Mayor's Motorcade and bring the spirit of Christmas here to Central State Hospital."
Outside the hospital in Milledgeville, hundreds of people fill the street to listen to the sounds of the marching band and even got to see Santa as he rode along in parade.
Mark Griffin, a performer at the celebration says "I think the parade, the play and the good Christmas cheer, may cheer them up, some of them that are without family."
After the parade, family and friends of the patients gathered inside to watch, "The Magic of Christmas." The Holiday program included various Christmas songs and dance numbers performed by patients of the mental hospital.
Mayor Reichert continues to say, "A lot of the patients or consumers here at Central State put on a pageant, a Christmas pageant and it is always so heart warming to see the spirit of Christmas comes to life."
