Novice teachers from every corner of the state are converging on Macon this weekend for the PAGE teacher academy.
The organization offers the service to new teachers in an effort to combat a crisis in Georgia.... a teacher shortage.
Jamie Strickland is a middle school science teacher. She started teaching last year like thousands of others across Georgia.
"I think as new teachers we can lose our enthusiasm and it's important to come to these things and be rejuvenated and get excited about being in the classroom," said Strickland.
But studies show fifty percent of those who start teaching here in Georgia will leave the classroom within five years. The Professional Association of Georgia Educators is fighting those stats with its sixth annual Teacher Academy.
"This is PAGE's effort to address that deficit by helping these young educators build a network, build their skills and hopefully stay in the profession for more than five years," said Dr. Ann Stuckey with PAGE.
The Academy consists of sessions like technology, leadership and classroom management.
"Without the Teacher Academy I would most likely not still be teaching," said Teacher Academy graduate Melissa Burchette.
There are over 50 participants in the two year program, and PAGE spends around $13,000 per participant per year, but it's proven to be very effective.
PAGE has seen a 90 % retention rate coming out of the teacher academy. If you would like to learn more about the program log on to www.FOX24.com, and we'll link you to their website.
