School is back in session at Bloomfield Middle after a code red lockdown Tuesday morning.
"I don't know if I want to come back. That's kind of scary," said 8th grader Miranda Baughcom.
The Bibb County School District says a seventh grader brought a .38 caliber gun to school which discharged in the in school suspension classroom shortly after 8 AM. They say the child has been apprehended, and no one was injured.
"I think that it's ridiculous that someone would bring a gun to school. Why would they bring it? Were they trying to hurt somebody? Were they trying to show it off?" said Baughcom.
The school sent a letter home with students explaining the situation but some parents say that's not enough.
"I'm here to withdraw my child. I'm taking him away from Bloomfield because if they're letting this go on, I don't feel safe with my kid here period," said Janine Jackson.
"What are they going to do when the kids just start shooting off in the school? They can't go anywhere. They're just stuck inside the building. That's not keeping the kids safe, and then when the parents go in there and try to get them out and they won’t let them out of the building that's crazy," said Tammy Mathis.
But school officials maintain the school is a safe place with appropriate security measures.
"Whenever an incident like this happens we go into an immediate lockdown. The school responded appropriately. Campus police were here and everything was taken care of to high satisfaction," said Assistant Superintendent Dr. Craig Lockhart.
He says they are unsure how the gun was snuck into the school, but an investigation is ongoing.

I cant believe this..OMG..i feel that the parent should be trialed because it was her reponsibility to make sure that her son was safe at home but yet he is exposed of all types of violence with guns..it is the mothers fault because if she was paying attention and making sure that the safety weapons were put away this wouldnt hace happened..what if someone would have been injured..i think maybe he should attend anger management and therapy.maybe they should start searchin schools before entering

The parents and the kid need to be locked up. Wake up people. And yes...Praying is always the best thing we can do, but remember that God has given us the knowledge of wisdom to discipline. Without discipline, we'll never fix the problems.

Why wasn't the parents informed about the CODE RED (gun problem) at Bloomfield Middle School on Tuesday August25,2009. Alot of parents found out by text messages from their child(ren) or the news. The School did not notifity the parents to tell them about the problem. They need more police not only one at the school! Why didn't they let the parents know about the CODE RED(gun) but let the news before the parents. And why wasn't the child arrested for shooting at school and was let home.

The area these children are from is a hard core neighborhood and believe me when I tell you they don't need to take from their parents if they want a gun. The gangs will just hand them one if they want it in return for muling drugs. Yes, parents should be more aware of what their children are doing but it can not be assumed that the gun came from home. Not in this neighborhood.

This should not be tolerated in school. That student school be evaluated and counseled, his parents gun permit tken or if they didn't have one then arrest them . that was negilient on behalf of the parent to let that child get a loaded gun. the students at Bloomfield Middle doesn't have security on campus like the other schools. Please don't let us send our children to school to die we send them to LEARN. Please Sharon Patterson and The Mayor and Sheriff do sometning NOW.Okay Calibine!!!

Why wasn't the parents notified about the gun gong off in the bookbag.? Why wasn't the school closed for the day until the investigation was done? If this had been at one of the other schools or the new school then something different would have been done. I don't think the children at Bloomfield middle School is getting the security other schools are getting. The parents of that child should be arrested, if nothing is going to be done then every parent should take some kind of action too.
