Celebrators Head To Lake Tobesofkee

FOX24’s Linh Bui takes us to Lake Tobesofkee where some Middle Georgians kicked off the holiday weekend

The July Fourth Holiday weekend begins Friday. And many Middle Georgians say Lake Tobesofkee is the perfect place to celebrate.

Jerome Smith and his family kick off the holiday weekend with some fun in the sun.

"We got here about 9:30 am or a quarter to 10,” Smith says. “It's a great place to go for the price."

He says Lake Tobesofkee is close to their home in Centerville. And that his grandchildren love swimming in the water and playing in the sand. But Smith says they don't forget what they're celebrating.

"We're celebrating the sacrifices of our fore fathers for giving us a country where we are free so we can come out and enjoy the holiday. And we're thankful God has created all of this for us,” Smith says.

The July Fourth holiday also means a lot to Michelle Dupeys and her family.

"We're from a military family,” Dupeys says. “My husband is retired military, his father is retired military and my older son is in the military. So the Fourth of July and any military holiday is kind of a big deal. Not that we celebrate in a big way, but there is some meaning behind it."

With food on the barbeque, Dupeys says the holiday is a chance to relax with loved ones. She says they came to Lake Tobesofkee on Friday to try to beat the crowds.

"We don't typically come out on a really busy weekend, so we thought today wouldn't be as bad as tomorrow,” Dupeys says.

The celebrations continue at Lake Tobesofkee on Saturday; fireworks will go off at 9:30 pm.

I remember celebrating the fourth, which is also my aunts birthday at Lakeside Park.
