Three Middle Georgians are being treated for the H1N1 virus also known as the Swine Flu.
“This is not a panic time. We’ve got 500,000 people in this district and three people have been reported with the flu so we suspect that there are many times over that have not been confirmed with lab tests,” said Dr. David Harvey with the North Central Health District.
Harvey says a Jones County man contracted the disease Mid May in Texas, but this week a teen from Wilkinson County and a pre-teen from Bibb County were diagnosed. He says the two contracted the disease at separate camps in North Georgia.
“The two older ones are well and are home as I can understand it, and the young lady is hospitalized and responding well to treatment,” said Harvey.
Health officials suggest going to the doctor at the first sign of flu like symptoms and washing your hands as often as possible.
“I didn’t expect the Swine Flu to be here, but I guess with AIDS or anything else you’ve got to be aware and be alert,” said Macon resident Scott Sutton.
“It’s awful. It’s an awful epidemic and I’ll be glad when someone finds a cure,” said Macon resident Cynthia Bennett.
The health district says if people don't change their hygienic lifestyle then the disease could affect a significant portion of the population.

It is scary to know that the swine flu has gotten so close to home. i live in Wilkinson County and work in Bibb. I am not going to go out and buy hazmat suits for me and my family but we will be a little more cautious in our day to day activites.
