Shortly after midnight, a Georgia College police officer notified fire officials that smoke was coming out of the Alpha Delta Pi house.
"Because of their noticing this fire in its relatively smaller stages, we had an opportunity to save a good portion of the structure," said Milledgeville Fire Chief Tom Dietrich.
The cause is still under investigation, but sorority officials confirm the historic home was undergoing renovations.
The fire chief says three women live at the ADPi house none of which were at home at the time of the fire. He says none of them can continue to stay here because of dangerous CO2 levels, but the school has reached out to provide housing.
"I don't know of any other major disasters on campus in the last several years. This is an unfortunate situation for a group of our students, and the university will do everything they can to help them," said GCSU representative Judy Bailey.
Sorority members declined to comment on camera but say the home can be restored.
