Jones County Offical Speaks on Fatal Rollovers

Kendall Herold

Two fatal vehicle roll over accidents struck Jones County in just one weekend. The Jones County Sheriff's Office is now picking up the pieces and investigating the two accidents; and making sure residents stay safe behind the wheel.

Cpt. Billy Mitchell with the Jones County Sheriff's Office says, "They're both tragic accidents. And we sure hate that for the families. But we just urge people to take a little bit more time and pay closer attention to the roadways."

The first fatal roll over occurred Friday on Chambers Road when 65 year old Gloria Woodward lost control of her Dodge Durango and overturned in a creek. Woodward was pronounced dead on the scene.

60 year old James Hudson was traveling westbound here on Highway 18 Sunday. He lost control of his Volkswagen convertible near Upper River Road. His vehicle then overturned and Hudson was thrown from the vehicle. He was pronounced dead on the scene.

Captain Mitchell with the Jones County Sheriff's Office says the agency tries to prevent fatalities by stopping vehicles for traffic infractions, but citizens should do their part to stay safe as well.

"People can avoid crashes if they just slow down some, and leave a little bit ahead of time so they can basically arrive there safely, arrive to their destination safely."

Captain Mitchell says with the Fourth of July holiday quickly approaching, all drivers should continue to practice safe roadway habits.
