Bonaire Subdivision to Feature Cemetery

Chace Ambrose

Last Sunday a man was riding around Bonaire Georgia and happened upon a subdivision called The Meadow at Riverbend Plantation. He entered the subdivision and drove to the end of Hiawassee Street where he discovered this cemetery. Seeing several broken headstones and construction equipment nearby, the concerned citizen called Fox 24. Upon our investigation it was discovered that the equipment had not damaged the cemetery and in fact the owners have big plans for that area.

The property owners are not only planning to restore the cemetery but also to make it a centerpiece for the community.

"Our project here Riverbend Plantation, the master plan of this took into consideration the location of this cemetery. We laid our street work out and our lots out to protect and pay tribute to this history in Houston County." -Mark Byrd/Byrd & Company

One of the historic graves belongs to Colonel Abner Redding who was killed by Sherman's troops in the battle of Griswoldville. Redding's great grandson Mr. Gillespie sold the property for the project and is supportive of the restoration.

"He was up here this morning he wanted to be here now but he couldn't but it gladdens our heart to know that he's embracing our project and he's delighted that we're restoring this." -Dave Davidson/Byrd & Company

The developers say that once complete they hope the cemetery will serve as a peaceful park area similar to what one might find in Savannah. Currently Lee and Son's has been contracted to clean up the graveyard and have been doing so mainly by hand. Once the project is complete those buried at the once overgrown cemetery will again be gone but not forgotten.
