Christians Mark the Beginning of Lent Wednesday With Customary Service

Christians in Central Georgia mark the beginning of Lent with customary ceremonies.
St. Joseph's Catholic Church in downtown Macon held Ash Wednesday Mass at 10 a.m.
Parishioners were marked with ashes on their foreheads as they recognize the first day of Lent.
The Roman Catholic and Protestant churches honor the 40 days before Easter symbolizing the days Christ prayed and fasted.

" We use this 40 day period before Easter to renew the grace that God gives us," said Father Allen McDonald.

Several local churches held Ash Wednesday Mass.
Many Christians said the first day of Lent marks a new beginning.
