Telfair County community welcomes a new sheriff.
Sheriff Chris Steverson was sworn into office at the Telfair County Courthouse Monday morning.
Sheriff Steverson was surrounded by a small crowd of family, friends and neighbors who witnessed the ceremony.
Sheriff Steverson replaces former Sheriff, Johnny Smith.
Sheriff Steverson said he plans to improve communication between the sheriff's office and citizens.

"I'd like to facilitate community involvement in the sheriff's department," said Sheriff Steverson. "I believe the sheriff's department is only as good as the relationship it shares with the community that it serves."

Sheriff Steverson also said he plans to look for qualified deputies to fill vacant positions.
His first day on the job is Tuesday, January 1st.
