MPD Investigation Complete in Shooting Death of Sammie Davis, Jr.

According to City of Macon's Public Information Officer Chris Floore, the investigation division of the Macon Police Department has now substantially completed its investigation into the December 21 shooting death of Sammie Davis, Jr.

Davis was shot and killed by officer Clayton Sutton in the parking lot of Kroger on Pio Nono Avenue. Inconsistencies in police reports have drawn public scrutiny and prompted a visit of Macon Mayor Robert Reichert to the Davis family.

In a release to WGXA, Reichert explains his reason for the visit, saying quote.

"As mayor, I felt it my duty to visit with Mr. Davis' family and to assure them - and the community - that an appropriate investigation would be conducted."

According to Chris Floore ,the file's has been delivered to the district attorney's office for their review and determination of whether any criminal conduct was involved. additional information, such as toxicology and forensic reports, are still pending and will be turned over for their review upon receipt.

The case has also drawn the attention of the NAACP, who says they will conduct their own investigation into the matter.

"The NAACP is very saddened about the incident of the shooting of Sammie Davis Jr. and the allegations that have been made and will not rest until the facts in this case have been disclosed to the family and community.

The mayor's office expects to hear from the DA's office within a few days and says the city and the Macon Police Department will cooperate fully with their decision.

"I'm confident that the Macon Police Department has done an appropriate investigation in order to gather the necessary information and ensure that an accurate picture of what happened is presented," said Mayor Reichert.

The shooting incident that occurred on Friday, December 21 at the Pio Nono Kroger which resulted in the death of Mr. Sammie Davis, Jr. has saddened and concerned our community. Since a Macon police officer was involved in the shooting, the public has a heightened interest in knowing what happened.

As Mayor, I felt it my duty to visit with Mr. Davis’ family and to assure them – and the community – that an appropriate investigation would be conducted.

The Investigation Division of the Macon Police Department has been working diligently on this case and has now substantially completed its investigation; earlier today, the file was delivered to the District Attorney’s Office for their review and determination of whether any criminal conduct was involved. Additional information, such as toxicology and forensic reports, are still pending and will be turned over for their review upon receipt.

We expect to hear from the District Attorney’s Office within a few days, and the City of Macon and Macon Police Department will cooperate fully with their decision.

I’m confident that the Macon Police Department has done an appropriate investigation in order to gather the necessary information and ensure that an accurate picture of what happened is presented.
