Learning Self Defense for Times of Danger

Amber Jones

Learning self defense is not always easy. It's a process that takes time and hard work. At Ahn' Tae Kwon Do, they take self defense seriously.

Charles Cheeks, an Instructor at Ahn’s Tae Kwon Do, says "It's really like any sport if you want to do well in tennis, soccer, basket ball, you have to show up for practice."

Heather has been a student at Ahn's for a year now and she and her family are little more assured as they go about their daily lives.

Heather Dubay is a student at Ahn’s Tae Kwon Do, she says it adds to her confidence, "The more I practice the more secure I get because I know that I have something to grasp on and do if something were to happen."

These defense techniques used are not learned over night. There are several skill levels involved, making most students lifelong learners.

"To become proficient in this takes practice." says Cheeks.

The benefits of learning Tae Kwon Do goes far beyond the obvious, creating a sense of security for everyone involved.

Heather Dubay says it’s changed her life, "I get a lot more confidence because I learn how my body works. Learn how to move it in stressful situations."

"You start learning self defense techniques from day one." adds Cheeks.

Whether you are big or small, there is always a need to defend yourself in times of trouble. With Self defense techniques, smaller may sometimes be better against the opposition.

"I learn how to put my body up against different size people, because I'm kind of small, so if a large man were to grab me, I can't outweigh him, I can't out Stengel him. So I have to be able to use leverage or pressure points or something like that." says Dubay.

Learning proper self defense techniques is one thing that anyone can do to increase their own personal safety.
This doesn’t just go for children; adults but both men and women can benefit from learning self defense techniques and practicing them until they are mastered.

"All of training here at Ahn's is self defense." Cheeks reminds.

The instructors at Ahn's Tae Kwon Do say there are several different stages of self defense and each can take years to master.
