The first day of school in Bibb County is less than two weeks away, but thanks to a new program with the Bibb County School District parents were in the classroom providing input today. The school district hosted two workshops Thursday.
Georgiana Braham is a parent of three children in the Bibb County School District. She thinks the program will benefit her family. "What I found out is that one of my children is in one of the schools that can utilize the program." says Branham.
Georgiana is one of many parents that showed up to learn about Bibb County School Districts Flexible Learning Program.
Joanna Gittens-Summerow is Title I Education Specialist for the Bibb County School District. She explains the program. "Well the Flexible Learning Program is an alternative supplemental educational program that we are implementing here in the district." says Summerow.
The program will provide students with additional learning opportunities that will assist them in mastering necessary academic standards.
"It's good to find out about the program so that my kids can get what they need to move on for the future." Braham adds.
Eight Bibb County Schools are eligible for funding for the Title I program set to begin in September and program planners are looking for input from parents.
Summerow says what the parents think is most important, "We are looking today to get input from our parents to tell us how they would like to see the flexible learning program. With their input and their comments and ideas, we are going to go back to the district and we are going to collaborate with our experts and come back to the parents and say this is the program that we will implement in our district."
When the planning stages are done, students will have additional tools provided throughout the coming school year.
"They will learn more and be a little bit more assured of themselves and be a little bit more prepared as they move on and move along in their lives." says Braham.
"They can feel successful and they can feel that they are making get strides in their education." adds Summerow.
