All of us have one thing in common, whether we know it or not we have a teacher to thank for who we are today. For me, it's Ellen Jones my 8th Grade language arts teacher who taught me life lessons far beyond the classroom I still value today.
The Professional Association of Georgia Educators marked National Teachers Day Tuesday by gathering the states top teachers for the PAGE Leadership Institute for Teachers of the Year.
"The purpose of today is to look at change. What's happening in our school houses and what we need to change to better meet the needs of our students to help them learn and grow," said Dr. Diane Ray.
All the teachers present were chosen by their school and then school district as Teacher of the Year. The teacher of the year from Bibb County says a Ms. Dunaway and Ms. Ferguson had an impact on her as a student and she now carries that into the classroom.
"I see all of my children the same way. Some of them may not be gifted, but I still teach them to where they can become critical thinkers and make very good decisions for their life that will help them to be better citizens and better people," said Bibb County Teacher of the Year Keturah Reese.
The 2008 Georgia Teacher of the Year was there and says it's important for everyone to take time this week and thank a teacher.
"Even if you're an adult, to reflect back on a teacher like I said today Ms. Tomlinson who really did make an imprint on me that in some way shape or form has helped you succeed in the role you're in today," said Emily Jennette.
