Healthy Living: Alzheimer's Association
It started out with a slight tick...
One day, things, started to change a little bit. The doctor says it is a tick or a little minor stroke, nothing to worry about,
The tick was the first sign of Alzheimer's disease,
Karen Kinsler of the Alzheimer's Association says it is a difficult and heartbreaking diagnosis.
Karen Kinsler/Director of Development: Alzheimer’s is a debilitating disease of the brain. It is a slowly progressing disease that takes away the functions of the individual.
Bill Spiedel and his wife Joan have been living with Alzheimer's. Joan, a former teacher received the life changing diagnosis three years ago.
Joan: it is just little things that you just can't do.
Bill: I noticed she couldn't recall names at first. She said I need you to balance the check book, she couldn't do the numbers. Then the doctor told her she couldn't drive.
The diagnosis for her forgetfulness came as somewhat of a relief, but it is a disease that affects the entire family.
It takes a huge toll on families. Caring for a person with Alzheimer’s ultimately becomes a 24 hour a day, 7 day a week process, it is very much like having a newborn in your care, only they are like an adult. They need to be looked after in every way for their safety and well being
For the Spiedels, the diagnosis has empowered their family and inspired them to work on behalf of the five million persons in the U.S. living with Alzheimer's disease
.
I think it is making us stronger. I don't think we are much happier, I wish there was so much I could do for her, it is a sense of frustration. I think one of the big benefits is the Alzheimer's Association, not only here but nationally
For Bill, his work with the Alzheimer's Association will help find a cure and to ensure others have access to Alzheimer's resources.
It is kind of like giving back, we have been very fortunate in our life, so that maybe some day they can cure this disease.
